Morals and Values in The drafting by Shirley Jackson In Shirley Jacksons, The Lottery, human morals and value argon thrown away all for the pride of winning something. What is it that they really win? When you win the lottery in this story, you actually win last by stoning. Isnt that ironic, people actually being competitive and getting ablaze about death in public. What morals or values do these people really have, and how are they different from what common society is aspect today? The first to heap up in the square on the day of the lottery are the children. The children, sweet, innocent children who do not know whatsoever better and are only taking part in this roughness because they view it as a fun game. Then the adults begin to gather in the square. They are older and wiser, knowing what is to become of that one invididual whose break is drawn. They know of the agony that awaits them, but they have been taught to believe in it, rummy ehy continue to partic ipate even if it means they are the chosen one.
